One of our past members, serving in the choir in the early 1980s when she lived in Rawtenstall, was ALWYN MELLOR who has gone on to become an acclaimed professional singer. The ladies are delighted that Alwyn has now become the patron of the choir.
Lancashire-born soprano Alwyn Mellor has received critical acclaim for her performances with Grange Park Opera, Longborough Festival Opera and Opera North, as well as for performances as Brünnhilde in Germany, Norway and Sweden. This year, the Wagner Bi-Centenary, she makes debuts as Brünnhilde with both the Paris and Seattle Operas. Trained at the Royal Northern College of Music, she also sings non Wagnerian operas, her engagements having also included Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Le nozze di Figaro for Santa Fe Opera, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Richard Strauss’ Elektra for the Canadian Opera Company and Puccini’s Tosca for the Opéra de Limoges and Welsh National Opera.
“Opera Now” says of Alwyn “She is set to become one of the great Wagnerian sopranos of her generation,”
We like to think that early participation in choral singing with the Rossendale Ladies Choir encouraged Alwyn in her love of music.
